The qualification develops the following knowledge, understanding and skills:

• specific services carried out within the hair and beauty sectors, roles and responsibilities and typical working patterns
• evolution of hair and beauty from use in ancient times to the mid 1990’s
• how technological advancements, changes to the economy, and social factors have influenced the sector
• chemistry of cosmetics and biology related to hair and beauty
• uses of design and images for business use
• technical hair styling, make-up and manicure skills

Key Stage 5

City & Guilds Level 2 VRQ in Women’s Hairdressing

Level 2 will suit you if you’re just starting out in hairdressing or have some knowledge and basic skills in the industry – probably from a role where you work under supervision.

• Working in the hair industry
• Follow Health and Safety Practice in the Salon
• Client Consultation for Hair Services
• Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp
• Promote products and services to clients in a salon
• Cutting women’s hair
• Colouring and lightening hair
• Perm and Neutralise Hair
• The Art of Dressing Hair
• Create an image based on a theme within the Hair and Beauty Sector

• Practical tasks

Level 3 is ideal if you’ve worked in hairdressing for some time and want to develop your skills in a specialised area. You might want a broad qualification or to learn a particular technique.

• Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon
• Hairdressing consultation support for colleagues
• Cut women’s hair to create a variety of looks
• Style and dress hair using a variety of techniques
• Colour hair to create a variety of looks
• Perm hair to create a variety of looks
• Bridal hairstyling
• Creative hairdressing design skills
• Display stock to promote sales in the salon
• Salon reception duties
